How software engineers can help solve climate change

Climate change isn't just a problem for some of us - it's a problem for all of us. It requires transforming everything we do. The tech sector is expected to consume 14% of the world’s energy consumption per year by 2040.

As engineers, we can help solve the climate crisis by embracing green software.

In this presentation, you will learn:

  1. How software contributes to carbon emissions

  2. Ways you can change how you build software to reduce and optimise your energy consumption

  3. How small changes can have a large impact.

Introduction to creating a green AI culture at your company - 1 hour workshop

In 2026, the electricity consumption of data centres is expected to approach 1,050 terawatt hours. This would rank data centres fifth on the list if it were a country, between Japan and Russia. Running AI is leading to a rapidly increasing demand for data centres, but renewable energy sources are still lagging.

A lot of companies are looking for ways to reduce their environmental impact as they implement AI systems.

This is a one-hour workshop where I will introduce the concept of green software, the impact of AI on the environment and give clear actions and resources so you can get started at your company. I also provide a getting started to guide to share with your team afterwards.

  • Rachel Crossland - VUWWIT 2023 Co-President (Victoria University of Wellington Women in Tech)

Annie Freeman was one of our speakers for WITCon 2023 (Women In Tech Conference) with her talk titled ‘Finding your confidence when the recipe for success changes’.

She shared her experience and advice on the transition from studying at university to working full time as a software engineer and how to continue building your confidence as you navigate change.

In particular, her takeaways of continued learning out of university and finding value in yourself rather than from others resonated with many.

Annie eloquently engaged the audience, comprised of a variety of backgrounds and age groups, throughout her presentation and we had great feedback from attendees about her talk.

She is a fantastic speaker I can confidently recommend, and we were grateful to have her present at WITCon.
